Difference between [s] and [del], or [i] and [em]?

Testing s
Testing del

Testing i
Testing em

They're the same thing, aren't they? Is there something that I'm missing?

Well, they are synonyms.

Rephrasing:
Their relationship is very similar to that of synonymous words in the English language.
