Having to upload one yourself is so annoying that's why I have not made any projects.

We have tried to do that in the past, but it is actually extremely difficult to pick out project thumbnails in PHP (the software we did use was fairly unreliable), so the functionality would have to be integrated to the mod, and I don't think most mod developers would be willing to add that.

Actually, AFAIK, Scratch picks out the thumbnail for you.
Thus, all mods should (except stuff like Snap) do as well.
The question is how Mod Share would recognize it.

The thumbnail extractor needs to be built into the uploader. This means that it would be possible to include it in the Insanity built-in uploader (or any other mod that includes that uploader), but not for all of the other mods that upload via the upload page.
